5 Daily Maintenance Tips to Extend the Life of Your Mechanical Watch

2026-01-12

Mechanical watches are not only timekeeping tools but also works of art that require careful care. Their intricate movements rely on precise coordination between numerous parts, and improper daily use can easily affect their performance and lifespan. Today, we’ll share 5 practical daily maintenance tips to help you keep your mechanical watch in top condition for years to come.

1. Keep It Away from Magnetic Fields

Modern life is full of magnetic sources—smartphones, laptops, refrigerators, and even hair dryers. Magnetic fields can cause the balance spring of a mechanical watch to magnetize, leading to inaccurate timekeeping (often gaining time significantly). To avoid this, never place your watch near strong magnetic devices for long periods. If you suspect magnetization, take it to a professional repair shop for demagnetization promptly.

2. Avoid Extreme Temperatures

Mechanical watches are sensitive to temperature changes. High temperatures (above 60°C) can damage the lubricating oil inside the movement, causing parts to wear faster; low temperatures (below 0°C) can make the lubricating oil thicken, affecting the smooth operation of the movement. When going out in summer, avoid exposing your watch to direct sunlight for a long time; in winter, don’t wear it outdoors for an extended period in extremely cold weather.

3. Regularly Wind It Correctly

For manual-winding mechanical watches, wind them at a fixed time every day (e.g., every morning) to ensure consistent power supply. When winding, use gentle force and stop immediately when you feel resistance—over-winding can damage the movement’s mainspring. For automatic mechanical watches, if you don’t wear them often (less than 8 hours a day), use a watch winder to keep the movement running and prevent lubricating oil from congealing.

4. Keep It Dry (Unless Water-Resistant)

Most mechanical watches are not fully waterproof (only water-resistant to a certain degree). Avoid wearing your watch while bathing, swimming, or washing dishes—steam and hot water are more damaging than cold water, as they can seep into the case and corrode the movement. Even water-resistant watches should be checked for water resistance annually, as the waterproof gasket can age and lose effectiveness over time.

5. Clean It Regularly

Dust, sweat, and skin oils can accumulate on the watch case and bracelet, causing discoloration and corrosion (especially for stainless steel or leather straps). Wipe the watch with a soft, dry cloth every day after wearing it. For the bracelet, you can use a soft brush dipped in a small amount of soapy water to clean the gaps, then dry it thoroughly with a cloth. Leather straps should be kept dry and avoided getting wet to prevent cracking.

In addition to daily maintenance, it’s recommended to send your mechanical watch to a professional service center for a full overhaul every 3-5 years. This includes disassembling the movement, cleaning parts, replacing lubricating oil, and checking for wear, which is the most effective way to extend its lifespan. Remember, a well-maintained mechanical watch can even become a heirloom passed down through generations!
